Care to share? [10 Sep 2009|05:10am]

[ mood | curious ]

Hi, my name's Mia and I've always wanted to work for the UN. I was a third culture kid, so I pretty much can't imagine myself working a not-so-diverse environment on a daily basis, plus I want to help out in the public sector. I've wanted it so much that I've been killing myself trying to learn various languages and I have an undergrad and grad degree that's pretty helpful for my plans.

However, in grad school I learned that there are legal documents (SecGen bulletins) that regulate so-called "prohibited conduct". It includes bullying, abuse of authority, and a whole load of scary crap that I can't even imagine happening in the UN. It's just so not like the UN for things like that to happen (esp. internally). But then a friend of mine sent me this link: http://www.unpost.org (pretty appalling stuff).

So anyone here who's actually worked/is currently working at the UN care to share your experiences at the UN? What was it like? Good? Bad? How did you feel about it? I'm actually prepping myself so as not to be shocked by the reality once I get there. I'd appreciate your help in putting me into perspective.

Thank you in advance.

-Mia

[15 Jul 2009|01:17pm]

oracle

Collapse )

It's been a while since I've looked anything up regarding intenational affairs- perhaps someone still fresh in junior united nations can help.

I am sponsoring a young girl in Armenia and I'm in the Navy. I want to know if Armenians are for or against the US military- i know as a country, we have a good relationship, but i don't know if they have a positive outlook on our miitary.

i don't want her parents to stop her from writing me because they don't like the military, so I just need to know whether or not it's okay to tell her I'm a sailor.

Anyone know where to look? I'm lost! XD

Hello [15 Feb 2007|11:01pm]

Hello

I've just come across this community and am heartened to see that it's active! I am a final year undergraduate Law student from Scotland, taking UN Law and writing my dissertation on Security Council reform (original maybe not, interesting yes). I look forward to watching (and possibly even contributing!) to this community.
It's unfortunate that my first post is a request, but hey. Does anybody have a reference for the original quote that is used all over the place in newspaper articles:
"The UN was not created to take humanity to heaven, but to save it from hell." - Dag Hammerskjold

It would be muchly appreciated. Thank you :)

MUN and Barcelona--no better combination! [13 Feb 2007|04:45pm]

iremos
Hi guys,

I'm passing this on you all either because I know that this international relations thing and partying in Barcelona is a combination you'd love, or you know a bunch of people who'd be interested in such an opportunity. If this is the case, please, pass it onto your friends!

Once again, I'm heading up the Press Team for the Catalonia Model United Nations conference in Barcelona, Spain, from May 2nd to the 5th. I'm looking for Reporters, Photographers, an Artist, and an Assistant Layout Editor for the daily newspaper.

The day in the life of a Press Staff member looks like this: wake up at the crack of dawn in your paid-for sweet hostel room, get to the swank hotel conference center before the Secretary-General, write articles, takes pictures, draw pretty pictures and political cartoons, or lay out our newspaper all day, then party until sunrise. If you want to speak to people who have lived this insane week before, let me know, and I'll put them in contact with you.

The United Nations Association Spain is sponsoring this conference and pays the conference fees and hostel rooms for the duration of the conference for staff members. Successful applicants are flexible, dependable, and not averse to hard work. Successful applicants only need to pay their way to Barcelona and for food.

Press Staff also have way more much fun than normal delegates, although if you are of the stoic Chair persuasion, there's spots for you too. I can put you in contact with the Conference Manager if you're interested in apply as a ho-hum regular staff member.

This year's Clarion newspaper and staff will be bigger, better, and pimpier than ever! The deadline for applications to me is March 15th.

Drop me a line if you want more info or have questions!

P.S. YOU MUST BE AT LEAST 18 TO GO. NO EXCEPTIONS.

The new Secretary-General [30 Sep 2006|12:31am]

[ mood | tired ]

I was reading an article in Dutch about the possible successors of Koffi Annan while I cam across this site.
It seems that the South-Korean Ban Ki-moon is the most likely candidate and it had me wondering what ye lot's opinions are on him and the 'elections'.  Do you agree with any of the candidates, are there others you prefer? I remember reading that the UN Secretary-General should come from a different continent but that's not entirely true is it? I mean, we already had three from Europe (Trygve Lie, Dag Hammerskjöld and Kurt Waldheim). Besides that, U Thant alread 'represented' Asia. So shouldn't the next Secretary-General com from either Oceania (or North-America/East-Europe depending on your geographical views) rather then Asia again?
I was just curious since this is the first election I am 'aware' that is happening since I was to young for the others.
Wikipedia
also holds a little bit of information.

UN Wire [13 Jul 2006|11:41pm]

beamused
The United Nations Foundation (Ted Turner's organization) produces "UN Wire", a very helpful and comprehensive daily news briefing of UN-related affairs and international issues in general - ranging from security, to human rights, to health and development, and energy and environment.  I highly recommend it, as it's such an invaulable time saver.  It provides synopses and links to top stories and commentaries from around the world (so it's not just American news sources).  It's possible to keep up with international affairs by reading only this briefing everyday.  You can sign up for it here:  http://www.unwire.org/.

Wanna go to Spain? [22 Mar 2006|08:35pm]

I'm the Editor-in-Chief of the first Model United Nations newspaper in Spain. I'm looking for a few good college student journalists to join our staff! The Catalonia Model United Nations, a student-run simulation of the real United Nations, will be held from May 3rd to the 6th. We're looking for photographers, reporters, layout editors, and cartoonists!

The CMUN Clarion showcases the very best young journalistic, artistic, and editorial talent Europe has to offer, producing a quality daily English-language newspaper, both in print, and online, for the CMUN 2006 conference. The newspaper’s name, CMUN Clarion, reflects the strong, bold call to action the conference delegates will be undertaking in their work. This is your chance to join this pioneering group of talented student journalists and learn the joys of the MUN press room!

MUN experience is a plus, but not required. Conference fees and hotel fees are covered, and a roundtrip flight goes for about $400 from JFK in New York to Barcelona.

If you're interested, post here, and I can send you an application. Also, post if you've got questions!

Please pass this on if you know of someone who may be interested!

Thanks.

Lis

OK. I'm writing a paper for my public policy class, and my topic (that I chose) is "Whether the UN's Millenium Project should be implemented."
Obviously, we've signed it, but we are far from implementing it.

Now, the barrier I've hit: are there any specific interest groups either directly supporting OR opposing the Millenium Project?

Obviously, those with protectionist views would be against it, but I need more specifics to argue both sides of the point- which is extremely hard considering I think anyone who would disagree with the Project is lacking any intelligence whatsoever.

So yeah, any help is appreciated!! :)

Finally some good-ish news in the Syria vs Lebanon dispute. Syria is going to consider allowing UN officials to interview six key figures that played a role in the Hariri murder.

More at the BBC website.

Relevant Security Council resolution is at the UN website. It will open a PDF file.

The report written by Detlev Mehlis can be found here (PDF) or here (HTML). It's very detailed and very fascinating, so go and read it!

$105 is not bad for it being up for a week, but we can do better than that if the word gets out and people realize $5 makes a huge difference.

I've been getting a lot of questions regarding UNICEF's involvement with the Hurricane Relief, and they're focused on rebuilding the educational systems there to help children cope with the trauma and form a community again, which is best through school. (http://www.unicef.org) for the latest on Hurricane Katrina relief efforts.

Thanks, I want to see some interest!

I'm currently working on a database of working IGO's (Inter-governmental Organizations) to help people research Model UN and UN assignments, however, I've hit a barrier and am hoping some of you might know where I can find information on the following IGOs. The ones on the list are IGOs that existed at some point in the 20th century, though they easily could have changed names, evolved or were enveloped into a newer IGO or died off with the change in international politics. What I am looking for is information as to whether the IGO still exists; if it does, if there is another name for it (even if it is just in another language); and finally, does it have an official website? If it doesn't exist, I'd appreciate a link to where it says it doesn't, if you find the information somewhere. Thanks a bunch for anyone who spends time looking for the information, or if you know it off the top of your brain! Any information to help me cut back this list is greatly appreciated!
